Starting brushwood ledge #1 - brash is stuck into the riverbank

Securing a flow deflector (large log)
Lots of wire and chestnut posts go into building a brushwood ledge

A little further upstream, the site of ledge #2 - a tighter space to work in!

Gathering 'brash' from obliging willow trees

Teamwork makes the dream work!

Driving posts into the riverbed is a good workout

This flow deflector (a very heavy tree trunk) was pushed for what seemed like hundreds of metres, sometimes uphill, to get to its destination, held in tight by poles and wire.  Hopefully its going nowhere!

Brushwood ledges trap silt to eventually form a new part of riverbank - a 'des res' for water voles

Our labour was rewarded when Rob Mungovan spotted a group of lamprey spawning!
